As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.
He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”
The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?
Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

Good morning, my name is Natasya Nareswari and I am running for student council president here at SMA 3 Bandung.
I have been a student here for two years and during that time I’ve made some really great friends, not only with the students, but the staff as well. When I look back I can’t even imagine going to any other school besides Midland. I tell everyone I know about SMA 3 and the opportunities it has given me.
Before I came to SMA 3 I had very few friends, was very shy and really struggling in school. But SMA 3 changed all that. I now play sports, join clubs, sing in a choir and go to school dances. Everyone and everything about SMA 3 has helped make me the person I am today.
Midland not only showed me how to have and make friends, but also how to survive in the real world. I currently go out into the community two days a week to learn about jobs and how to work when I leave SMA 3. SMA 3 teachers taught me how to interact with adults, students and co-workers. I have learned day-to-day living experiences such as making my bed, doing laundry and cooking.
As student council president I’m not sure how much I could, or would even want to, change about SMA 3 as it is already such a great place to come to. I can really only think of little things such as having parents come and watch more of our events and sports that we all participate in. We could also have a couple extra hot lunches throughout the year.

If I am selected student council president I want to be the same type of person that everyone has been to me. I want students to know they can come to me with suggestions and I will listen to them and try to make a difference. Thank you and I look forward to your votes.

On the holidays Zoe and I, along with my family, spent 3 days in Yogyakarta. We travelled by train overnight and arrived at 3.30am, Zoe and I were so tired that we couldnt wait to get to the hotel. Our hotel, The Pyrenees, was very luxurious and conveniently situated right beside Jalan Malioboro, so we were able to shop every evening along the street and buy many gifts for friends and family. Unfortunately, Jalan Malioboro is very busy all the time and each store sells similar products to the stores surrounding them so we didnt have a lot of choice in terms of souvenirs.
We hired a driver to take us from place to place and each morning we woke up early to visit various tourist attractions such as Candi Borobudur, Candi Prambanan, Kraton, Gunung Kaliurang and Parang Tritis. We enjoyed Yogyakarta specialties like gudeg, pecel and susu Kaliurang. The weather in Yogyakarta is very hot and we often carried an umbrella to sheild us from the sun so that we didn't burn. I didn't enjoy the hot weather there and always felt so much better when we came back to our hotel room which was nice and air conditioned.
I think that Yogyakarta is a great city, however personally I prefer Bandung for its cool weather and great shopping. Also, there are more options for food and it seems to taste better here from my experience. With that in mind, I still believe Yogyakarta is a fantastic holiday destination and would love to return in the future to visit the places that we didn't have time to see whilst there these holidays.

9. where did we go?
a. bali
b. singapore
c. yogyakarta
d. melbourne
e. jakarta

10. for how many days we spent holidays there?
a. 1 day
b. 2 days
c. 3 days
d. 4 days
e. 5 days

Tony Goldwyn

SETTING
A Futuristic, Dystopian Chicago
If you've ever been to Chicago, you'll recognize the landmarks of the city, though they've all been tweaked a bit:
·         When the Dauntless go to play Capture the Flag paintball, Tris climbs The Ferris wheel at Navy Pier
·         The Dauntless initiates zip line from a ruined Hancock building (17.47) down Lake Shore Drive (17.71) (which should be avoided during blizzards)
·         The Hub where the Choosing Ceremony goes down is really the Willis (formerly Sears) Tower (1.19) (which is very tall)
·         When Tris and Caleb talk outside of Erudite headquarters, they go by a giant "bean" in a place called Millennium (28.33-4)—which is really Millennium Park and a statue everyone calls the bean, but is actually named Cloud Gate
·         And there's a "large metal sculpture" (1.23) outside the school that could be either the Picass sculpture or maybe Alexander Calder's Flamingo

MY OPINION
I think this movie is so interesting. Divergent is all about identity, about searching your soul and determining who you are
While it is important to be yourself and have your own characteristics, you shouldn't only live by one trait and should try to have other traits also.

Natural Phenomenon

NATURAL PHENOMENON

A natural phenomenon is not a man-made event. Examples include sunrise, weather (fog, hurricanes, tornadoes), biological processes (decomposition, germination), physical processes (wave propagation, conservation of energy, erosion), tidal flow, and include natural disasters such as electromagnetic pulses, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes.
Various types of natural phenomena occur, including (but not limited to) the following:
  • Geological phenomena (volcanic activity and earthquakes)
  • Meteorological phenomena (hurricanes, thunderstorms, and tornadoes)
  • Oceanographic phenomena (tsunamis, ocean currents and breaking waves)
Exposure to forces of nature resulted in about 214,000 deaths in 2010 up from 31,000 in 1990.

EARTHQUAKE

An earthquake (also known as a quake, tremor or temblor) is the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic waves. The seismicity, seismism or seismic activity of an area refers to the frequency, type and size of earthquakes experienced over a period of time.
Earthquakes are measured using observations from seismometers. The moment magnitude is the most common scale on which earthquakes larger than approximately 5 are reported for the entire globe. The more numerous earthquakes smaller than magnitude 5 reported by national seismological observatories are measured mostly on the local magnitude scale, also referred to as the Richter scale. These two scales are numerically similar over their range of validity. Magnitude 3 or lower earthquakes are mostly almost imperceptible or weak and magnitude 7 and over potentially cause serious damage over larger areas, depending on their depth. The largest earthquakes in historic times have been of magnitude slightly over 9, although there is no limit to the possible magnitude. The most recent large earthquake of magnitude 9.0 or larger was a 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan in 2011 (as of October 2012), and it was the largest Japanese earthquake since records began. Intensity of shaking is measured on the modified Mercalli scale. The shallower an earthquake, the more damage to structures it causes, all else being equal.
At the Earth's surface, earthquakes manifest themselves by shaking and sometimes displacement of the ground. When the epicenter of a large earthquake is located offshore, the seabed may be displaced sufficiently to cause a tsunami. Earthquakes can also trigger landslides, and occasionally volcanic activity.
In its most general sense, the word earthquake is used to describe any seismic event — whether natural or caused by humans — that generates seismic waves. Earthquakes are caused mostly by rupture of geological faults, but also by other events such as volcanic activity, landslides, mine blasts, and nuclear tests. An earthquake's point of initial rupture is called its focus or hypocenter. The epicenter is the point at ground level directly above the hypocenter.

Effects of Earthquake
  1. Shaking and ground rupture

  2. Landslides and avalanches

  3. Fires

  4. Soil liquefaction

  5. Tsunami

  6. Floods

  7. Human impacts

An earthquake may cause injury and loss of life, road and bridge damage, general property damage (which may or may not be covered by earthquake insurance), and collapse or destabilization (potentially leading to future collapse) of buildings. The aftermath may bring disease, lack of basic necessities, and higher insurance premiums.
